How to Continue Practicing Reiki After Your First Course

By Christine, Master Reiki Practitioner

My Experience as a New Reiki Student

When I finished Reiki Level 1 years ago, I was told, “Just practice every day for the next month.” And I did. I practiced consistently, felt good, and then suddenly hit this moment of… what now? Was I supposed to take another course? Was I just meant to read my manual and figure it out? It felt like something was missing. Over the last few years, through my own healing work, books, trainings, and starting my practice, I have found a few simple things that really helped me continue developing my energy healing abilities. I hope they help you too.

3 Ways to Continue Your Reiki Practice After Level 1

1. Practice Visualizing Energy Fields

One thing that really helped me was practicing visualizing energy around myself, pets, plants, crystals, anything really. This builds your ability to sense and trust what you feel.

Here is how I like to do it:

  • Sit in a room with soft or low light

  • Relax your eyes and look about 1 to 3 inches above the plant or object

  • Allow yourself to imagine an aura around it

  • Notice color, texture, shape

  • Rest your eyes if you need to, then try again

This is not about “seeing” something perfectly. It is about getting comfortable using your inner senses. Eventually I started doing this with plants in my home, and then even around my own body in the mirror. You can also move your finger slowly near the plants aura and see how your energy interacts with it. It is playful and honestly kind of magical.

2. Practice Intuition

One thing I learned from the famous Intuitive, Sonia Choquette, is to choose one day of the week where you pretend you are psychic. Just for that day, let yourself play with the idea. If the word psychic can feel like a lot, you can think of this as practicing your intuition.

In the morning, I like to sit with my breakfast, relax, and listen for anything subtle:

  • What do I feel might happen today

  • What do I sense about the energy of the day

  • What intuitive nudges show up

Some thoughts will be loud, doubtful, or judging. That is your ego. Your intuition is usually quiet, gentle, and easy to miss. If you get something right, celebrate it. If you do not, no worries at all. This is a game. You are building trust with your intuition, not trying to force anything.

3. Deepen Your Study of the Chakras

Most people are familiar with the seven main chakras, but there are also higher chakras such as the eighth, ninth, and tenth that can guide emotional and spiritual healing.

It is helpful to learn:

  • the emotions connected to each chakra

  • the physical areas they influence

  • their colors, elements, and symbolism

  • how they relate to trauma, intuition, grounding, or creativity

For example, people working through ancestral or inherited patterns may connect with the tenth chakra, which relates to ancestral emotion, inherited trauma, and the energetic blueprint passed down through generations. A wonderful resource for this is Energy Healing for Trauma, Stress and Chronic Illness by Cyndi Dale. It is one of the most comprehensive energy healing books I have read.

6 Grounding Techniques to Calm Your Mind, Body, and Energy

Have you ever felt like your mind was racing in a hundred directions, replaying the past, predicting the future, or spiraling in anxious thoughts?
When our nervous system becomes overstimulated, we lose touch with the present moment and the peace within our body. Grounding helps us return home to ourselves, to calm, clarity, and connection.

In my Reiki and psychedelic integration practice, I often guide clients through simple grounding techniques that reconnect them to their body and the steady support of the Earth. These practices are especially helpful after energy work, meditation, or psychedelic experiences, anytime your system feels open, heightened, or unanchored.

Here are six grounding techniques to help you come back into your body and restore balance to your energy field.

1. Physically Connect with Nature

If you can, step outside and let your body meet the Earth.
Take off your shoes and stand barefoot on the grass, or rest your hand on a tree and feel its texture and strength. Notice the colors, shapes, and sensations around you.
Breathe deeply and imagine your energy harmonizing with the calm rhythm of nature.

Even a few mindful moments outdoors can reset your nervous system and remind you that you are supported by something vast and steady.

2. Visualize Your Roots

If you are indoors or unable to step outside, try this powerful visualization.
Imagine your spine as the trunk of a tree and see roots growing down through your feet, anchoring you deep into the earth below.
With each breath, feel yourself becoming more present, more supported, and more connected.
This grounding technique is especially soothing after energy work or psychedelic journeys when your awareness feels expanded or untethered.

3. Reconnect Through Body Awareness

If visualization is not your thing, simply bring gentle awareness to your body.
Notice the weight of your hands, the texture of your skin, or any subtle sensations of warmth or tightness.
You might lightly rub your palms together or massage your thumb into your hand.
These small physical actions draw your attention out of racing thoughts and back into your body, the safest and most sacred place you can be.

4. Ground Through Your Senses

When your mind feels flooded, your focus often narrows. Try expanding your awareness by tuning into your surroundings.
Notice one thing you can see, one sound you can hear, one scent in the air, and the feeling of fabric against your skin.
This simple sensory scan helps your body recognize that you are safe in this present moment.

5. Hold a Grounding Crystal

For those who love working with crystals, Black Obsidian is one of the most grounding stones.
Hold it in your hand and notice its weight, texture, and temperature.
By focusing on this tangible piece of Earth, you gently draw your awareness downward, balancing your energy and calming your nervous system.

6. Drink Water with Awareness

This may sound simple, but mindful hydration is a deeply grounding ritual.
As you take a sip, notice the coolness of the water, the way it moves down your throat, and how it settles in your belly.
When you bring full awareness to even small actions, you remind your body that it is safe, nourished, and present.

Returning to the Body

Whatever grounding practice you choose, whether stepping outside, visualizing roots, or holding a crystal, the key is awareness.
Grounding is not about escaping your feelings; it is about reconnecting with your body and the Earth’s steady rhythm beneath it.

Through Reiki and integration work, I have seen how these simple moments of connection can calm the mind, regulate the nervous system, and open space for deep healing.

May these grounding techniques bring you back to yourself, one breath at a time.
